Have you ever been trying to concentrate at your computer when something you hear around you keeps pulling your attention away or distracting you?
This happened all the time when I worked in an office made up of cubicles and about 2 dozen other people. Sometimes it happens at home if I can hear the TV or the stereo (or lately, my wife's new iPhone - I can hear BOTH sides of the conversation!). I'm easily distracted.
But I recently found a very cool thing online that helps drown out all that distracting noise, and it is so simple and fast. Oh, and its free. It's a site called "Simply Noise."
You simply (see what I did there:)) hover over the window on the right and select what kind of noise you like. It's awesome. You actually can choose between white, pink, or brown noise, indicated by, what else, white, pink or brown buttons.
If you'd like to find out why there is such a thing as noise colors - and what they are used for - check out this post by Ludovic: What are Noise Colors? Improve Focus and Sleep.
They also have "Thunderstorm," "Summer Wave," "Babbling Brooks," and "Winter Nights." Each of those free sounds will play for 30 minutes.
Not only can you focus better masking distracting noise with white noise, it can help you relax. Being more calm and focused can really help improve your life. So this is more than just interesting audio stuff. You can actually improve your life. And how often can you do that with something as simple as that?
BTW, since I first wrote this post, they have developed a mobile app and a store where you can buy the hour-long versions of these sounds.
The store also has something called "binaural beats." These are sounds that combine two different audios to generate a pulsing rhythm when you listen in headphones. Different frequencies are supposed to help you feel a different way. The science on this is fairly thin. But it's interesting anyway.
Go check it out and discover another use of audio in your life. You might even find yourself feeling better within seconds.
